In tangent developments in 1993 Walker co-wrote and co-performed (with Goran Bregović) the single "Man From Reno" for the soundtrack of the film Toxic Affair.

1996

In 1996 he recorded the song "I Threw It All Away" under the direction of Nick Cave for inclusion in the soundtrack for the film To Have And To Hold.

1999

Three years later he recorded the David Arnold song "Only Myself To Blame", for the soundtrack of the Bond film The World is not Enough.

That same year he wrote and produced the soundtrack for the Léos Carax film Pola X, which was released as an album.

2000

Scott Walker wrote and produced two songs for Ute Lemper the following year.

A Horror Soundtrack for Our Times

Coming 10 years after his last major work, the enigmatically headspinning Tilt is a triumphant return to his glorious past. Spector-esque pop sits alongside dark ballads blah, blah, blah, blah…

Of course it’s the opening that we still want to read. It’s the record that would see Scott 1-4 cash in, clean up, and be feted and celebrated. The lost boy child come home. Except that’s not how it will be. The road Scott Walker had chosen to slowly travel knows no way back. It might be a road that leads to ever increasing obscurity, cut adrift from all recognizable trends and movements, but it is a lonely road more vital, pulsing, and essentially modernist than the one any of Walker’s supposed contempories find themselves on.

The Drift is dense, terrifying, and discordant. Shards of orchestral noise are ripped and pasted into the nightmare landscapes of these songs. Lyrics, more of which later, are cut away to the blood and bone as the words confront and stare down melody. But here’s the thing—these songs soar! They are alive, crawling forwards, out of time and rooted in something more abstract, detached, but utterly relevant. How can something so profoundly moving and shocking be written off and brushed under the carpet as ‘file under experimental’. The experiment on The Drift comes with the chances being taken, the ideas that are being sung. Maybe it only sounds so jarring and strange because the climate of rock and roll it has been born into is so stale.

On track three, “Jesse”, Scott Walker sings: “I’m the only one left alive”.

Despite not being clever enough to review this record properly and not having the knowledge or the ear to pick up on the musical and literary allusions that are crawling all over The Drift, I am sure that after five listens, this is a singularly brilliant album. Of course, it was going to be more than five, but in truth that was enough, even too much. It is a draining and uncomfortable listen that leaves as much confusion and shadowy questions as it does moments of sheer clarity and shocking bloody beauty. It’s an album that will most likely sit on the shelf for weeks and weeks before it is brought out again. But even out of the here and now, even weeks, months, and years down the line, The Drift will lose none of its raw, devastating artistic power.

Opening with “Cossacks Are”, a beguiling, urgent, creeping song surely cloaked in the deepest black humour, the record immediately challenges. Guitars echo and the spaces, as Walker sings the refrain “with an arm across the torso...”, are filled in with the ghostly moaning of strings. Elsewhere, other spaces are left bare and bold, haunted only by Walker’s voice, no longer the rich baritone croon that coloured those early recordings, but a voice that is taut and wired and more haunting than ever. In “Jesse”, Walker apparently marries the traumas of Elvis Presley’s stillborn twin with the collapse of the twin towers. It’s a song that seems to be holding up a cracked mirror to the ugly, bloated American dream. Indeed, on “Clara” Walker sings the line “Dipped in blood in moonlight / Like what happened in America”, as the song falls apart then reconstructs as a horror story tracing the darkest movements of human ugliness.

On track nine, “The Escape”, Scott Walker sings: “World about to end / World about to end”.

Throughout the record there is a wilful and powerful lack of compromise. Free from the shackles of convention, the songs are allowed to be played out exactly as you feel they are imagined in Walker’s head. There is no other place in 2006 you will hear bloodcurdling screams followed by handclaps, unrelenting, pounding noise and what sounds like ghostly Arabic background voices all inhabiting the same song ("Hand Me Ups"). And this is one of the reasons that, above all of the extraordinary noise, The Drift sounds so essential.

As for the lyrics, to fit the music here, Walker has created a world of unflinching, nightmarish imagery. At times the lyrics seem to be ripped straight from the canvas of a Hieronymus Bosch painting, and at others, in debt to a strange poetry, as half-familiar phrases are mangled into a compelling slideshow of words. Personally, I have no real clue as to what Walker is singing about on The Drift, only the tragic inference and feel of these songs, which is heavy and palpable.

How to sum up a record like The Drift then? At once a fiercely subversive artistic statement completely out on its own in 2006, and also an album crackling with the most modern of ideas. There are thin lines here that are traceable all the way back to Walker’s early work, certainly threads that connect the off-kilter soundscapes of the likes of “It’s Raining Today” (from Scott 3) to the place he now finds himself in. As for the emotional impact of these songs, though remaining abstract and cloaked in confusion, the emotion haunts the air long after the album has clicked off. Is it mankind’s gradual, quickening drift into hell? The drifting of lost, forgotten love and regret and shame that lingers heavy in the atmosphere of these songs? It’s impossible to say what Scott Walker intends with this. It is enough to say that there are sounds being made here and passions being bared that nobody else in 2006 is capable or willing to confront. There are echoes of absurdity and pitch-black humour, echoes of melody and desolation, songs that are huge and broad but still whisper to you. It’s the sound of a man on a singular road to fuck knows where, and as such, The Drift—in all its nightmarish, bloody glory—is as bold and profound a comment on our times as has emerged so far this century. Essential listening.

This massively maligned album was Scott Walker's only album of the 1980's and the only fruits of a lucrative contract with Virgin Records that promised much and delivered so little. It seemed inconceivable that a stellar and legendary talent like his own could fall so dramatically from both critical and public grace, but that is what occurred with 'Climate Of Hunter'. 'Tilt', ten years later, did nothing to redress the matter. A great shame, because both albums, especially this one, took a hell of a lot of balls to make. And I believe the time is right for a reassessment of an album that, unlike so many released in the 1980's, has dated very little and, weird as it is, actually seems to make sounder sense now than it ever did.

To those who've never heard 'Climate', it's not an easy record to describe. It's a short album of seven highly original songs and one blues cover, only half of which bear proper titles, set in a wash of dischordant, jarring keyboards and rippling bass lines. Lyrically it makes very little sense, not that it matters when a top-form Engel is caressing his patent tones into the very depths of your willing soul. And, whatever else may strike you about this very left-field record, you can't fail to melt to THAT VOICE which, mixed right into your face, dominates 'Climate' so wonderfully. Backing the man is the most esoterically-assembled posse of international talent it's possible to imagine - there can't be many single-artist albums that feature artists as disperate as Mark Knopfler, Evan Parker and Billy Ocean for example - but they bring to the album a stratospheric range of sounds and influences that help make the overall result so damn strange and unique. But, make no mistake, this is Scott's baby. Period.

'Climate Of Hunter' is probably the worst-selling record Scott Walker ever made. It didn't stay in Virgin's full priced range for long and even at mid-price was deleted by the turn of the nineties, hardly helped by the universal tide of lousy reviews it garnered on first release. In a sense, I can understand that - after over a decade of waiting, something as unusual and unexpected as this hardly immediate collection of largely untitled and unconventional songs was well hard to take. But an album as adventurous and brave as 'Climate' can't be cast aside forever. Over the years I've played it rarely, then occasionally, then regularly, to the point where I simply could not be without a copy. Pick up a second hand copy somewhere - probably very cheaply - and bear with it. I think you're going to like it, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life.

Scott Walker is the stage name of the American singer-songwriter Noel Scott Engel (born 9 January 1943 in Hamilton, Ohio). He was named after his father. Walker resides in London, England.

Originally championed by Eddie Fisher in the late 1950s, Scott appeared several times under his real name on Fisher's TV series as a teen idol type in the vein of Fabian or Frankie Avalon.

Walker was among the first to adopt the electric bass guitar, mastering it to a proficiency to win regular session work in Los Angeles studios while still in his teens.

The Walker Brothers era

After playing in many bands he eventually joined with John Maus and Gary Leeds to form The Walker Brothers in Los Angeles in 1964. Leeds had recently toured the UK with P.J. Proby and was the catalyst to their relocation to London.

The Walker Brothers arrived in London in early 1965 and attained worldwide popularity with pop ballads. In early 1966 their popularity and fan base is said to have exceeded The Beatles in the UK and Europe. As lead singer, Scott attained pop star status.

Finding suitable material was always a problem. The Walkers' 60s sound mixes Phil Spector's "wall of sound" techniques with symphonic orchestrations featuring Britain's top musicians and arrangers. Scott Walker claimed authorship of this sound in recent interviews.

Artistic differences and the stresses stemming from overwhelming pop stardom led to the break-up of The Walker Brothers in 1967, although they reunited briefly for a tour of Japan the following year. On their return to the UK Scott produced a solo album for the tour's musical director and guitarist Terry Smith. The Walker Brothers' last two singles, "Stay With Me Baby" and "Walking In The Rain", struck fans and critics alike as retro, dated choices, harking back to earlier pop. Their failure to reach the top ten provided Scott with the necessary trigger for the split. It is noteworthy then that producer Johnny Franz and John Walker were keen to release the upbeat "Everything Under the Sun" as the single from Images, but Scott Walker "put his foot down", he later confessed, and scored another miss.

Scott Walker's Emerging Solo Work

Scott Walker began a solo career in a style clearly glimpsed in Images, the Walker Brothers' last album. To this he added risqué recordings of Jacques Brel songs, ably translated by Mort Shuman.

Walker's own original songs of this period are influenced by Brel. Walker explored European musical roots while expressing his own American experience. He was also reaching a new maturity as a recording artist.

Scott threw himself into intense study of contemporary and classical music, which included a sojourn in Quarr Abbey, a monastery on the Isle of Wight, to study Gregorian chant. His own songs gradually course into Lieder and classical musical modes.

Scott Walker's early solo career was successful in Britain; his first three albums sold in large numbers. There were also early indications that this concentrated attention was not conducive to his emotional well being. He became reclusive and somewhat distanced from his audience. During this time, he combined his earlier teen appeal with a darker, more idiosyncratic approach hinted at in songs like Orpheus on the Images album. Walker drove a fine line between classic ballads, his own compositions and Brel covers, all delivered inimitably.

At the peak of his fame in 1969, he had his own British TV series, Scott, featuring solo Walker performances of ballads, big band standards and introductions of his own and Brel compositions. In recent interviews he admitted that a self-indulgent complacency crept into his choice of material and his reliance on slow tempos by his third album.

The early 70's saw Walker revert to cover versions of popular film tunes and a serious flirtation with the country and western scene. Walker regards these as his lost years as an artist, but they yielded four albums. However, these albums featured no original material whatsoever.

Walker Brothers Reunite

Perhaps for mutual protection, the Walker Brothers "who never were", as one writer had famously described them, reunited in 1975 to produce three albums. Their first single, No Regrets, from the album of the same title climbed to No. 7 on the British charts.

However, follow up singles, Lines, and others from the second album failed to chart. Walker regards Lines as the best single the Walkers released.

With the imminent demise of their record label the Walkers collaborated on an album of original material that was in stark contrast to the country flavoured tunes of the first two albums. Personal issues intervened for John and they split once more, a move he says he now regrets.

Return to Solo Works

Known for being private and reclusive, Walker's recording activity has been sporadic since the late 1970s. He has released just three albums since 1980.

Walker is a continuing influence on other artists, in particular Marc Almond, Billy MacKenzie of the Associates, David Sylvian, the Divine Comedy/Neil Hannon, and cult performer Glyn Styler. In 2000 he curated the London South Bank Centre's annual summer live music festival, Meltdown, which has a tradition of celebrity curators. He did not perform at Meltdown himself, but wrote the music for The Richard Alston Dance Project item Thimblerigging.

In October 2003 Walker was given an award for his contribution to music by the British music magazine Q. This was presented by Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, and Scott received a standing ovation at the presentation. This award has been presented only twice before, the first time to Phil Spector, and the second to Brian Eno. The release of a retrospective box set, 5 Easy Pieces, comprising five themed discs spanning Walker's work with The Walker Brothers, his solo career (including film soundtrack work), and the two pieces composed for Ute Lemper, followed soon after.

In June of 2006 MOJO Magazine and Radio honoured Scott Walker with The MOJO Icon Award: "Voted for by MOJO readers and Mojo4music users, the recipient of this award has enjoyed a spectacular career on a global scale". It was presented by Phil Alexander.

A documentary film, Scott Walker: 30 Century Man, was completed in 2006 by New York film director Stephen Kijak (Cinemania and Never Met Picasso). Interviews were recorded with David Bowie (executive producer of the film), Radiohead, Sting, Gavin Friday and many musicians associated with Walker over the years.

Every once in a while, an album comes along that doesn't simply surprise you, it takes you down an alleyway, rips off all your clothes, then hares away with your socks on its head, singing selections from South Pacific. And just before it disappears from view, you notice that David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Brian Eno are cavorting alongside it, sharing the spoils and plotting further misdeeds. The fact that the original miscreant then shrugs them aside and tears off on its own is neither here nor there. What matters is, when Scott Walker set to work (somewhat reluctantly, one feels) on the third post-comeback Walker Brothers album, that was the impression which he had in mind. Of course it wouldn't quite work out like that. Whatever else they may have been, as their rebirth accelerated towards its gory end, the Walkers remained a democracy, splitting vocals and songs between the three non-siblings, and only occasionally allowing any one the upper hand. But whereas John was still locked into the art country balladeering which had always been his forte, and Gary was having trouble completing his allotment, Scott had finally realized that he had more to offer than another Kris Kristofferson outtake.

As a writer, he had been all but silent since the late 1960's, when his peculiarly twisted post-pop visions sent solo album after solo album hurtling into a commercial void. Now, however, he was reaching back into that abyss, and emerged with four songs -- "Niteflights," "The Electrician," "Shut Out," and "Fat Mama Kick" -- which not only realigned his entire future career, they also twisted the on-going landscape of rock music itself. Electro-pumping soundscapes of grandiose synth, all four were clearly inspired by Bowie's recent work with Iggy and Eno. But they took that role model so much further that within the year, they themselves were delineating much of what Bowie himself would accomplish on his own next two albums (Lodger and Scary Monsters). Elsewhere, Midge Ure later confessed that "The Electrician" inspired him to write Ultravox's "Vienna," and, from there, one can project the entire new romantic/synth-pop movement from Walker's presumably unwitting role models.

In a perfect world, Scott would have completed the entire album himself, or at least been given an EP to himself. But of course that was not to be, and so Nite Flights appeared with the rest of the boys, the rest of the baggage, and, though both John and Gary at least tried to keep up with their bandmate, their failure was as painful as it was inevitable. Gary's "Death of Romance" and John's "Disciples of Death" are at least vindicated by their titles, but the songs are as thin as their composers voices and could be outtakes from another album entirely. They're certainly from another planet.

Scott Walker's third album was produced by John Franz and recorded by Peter Oliff. The album was originally released in April 1969 and stayed in the UK-charts for four weeks, after having reached number 3. It came lavishly packaged in a semi laminated colour gatefold sleeve, designed by Linda Glover.

Though it's one of my personal favorites, the lush orchestral music on this album will not appeal to everyone. It's a style largely derived from cabaret performers like Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck and the production mimics Phil Spector's classic "wall of sound" minus the horns and background singers. That said, the lyrics tell the strangely fascinating stories of vagrants, transsexuals, mercenaries and other marginalized figures. His narratives, with a few exceptions, make the Velvet Underground seem tame.

Scott's first solo album.

Originally released in 1967 the album features a mix of originals and covers with sweeping, bloated orchestral arrangements, while Walker does his best to imitate the vocal girth of Tony Bennet & Frank Sinatra. A top 3-album when originally released in the UK. Tracks include Tim Hardin's 'Lady Came From Baltimore', Jacques Brel's classic 'Amsterdam' & 'The Big Hurt'.

Listening to Scott Walker's first solo album more than three decades after its appearance is like entering a parallel universe. Those who know the Walker Brothers from pop hits like "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine" and "Make It Easy on Yourself" may be forgiven, if we are late to appreciate the genius of their lead singer.

Scott has often been named the definitive interpreter of Jacques Brel, and here he proves his mettle on classics such as "Mathilde," "My Death," and "Amsterdam." In addition he pays homage to Tony Bennet with "When Joanna Loved Me" and tips his hat to Toni Fisher with a soulful updating of "The Big Hurt." From Vegas to Broadway, he hits the musical heights, without ever resorting to imitation or parody. And, if that weren't enough, he also writes--gorgeously. Consider the baroque architechtonics of what is arguably his masterpiece, "Montague Terrace," where grandeur and pathos blend in a seamless musical tapestry.

Underscoring it all is Scott's voice, an exquisite instrument without equal in the pantheon of pop music. Like a reluctant Prometheus, he stands above us lesser mortals and bemoans the vanities that alienate us, one from the other, all in a brooding, perfectly modulated baritone. Consider the poignancy of these words from Scott's self-penned "Such a Small Love": "He speaks, I don't hear a word he's saying, / Hang on to the pine trees and the snow; / Reach out, grab the memories that are left for your hand, / They'll help you get by for a while." Take a trip back in time and enter this parallel world. Your ears will thank you.
